Nevik Record Debut Single “Greed Wears a Crown” at The Source Studio Exeter
Every so often, a young band comes along that immediately makes you pay attention.
For us, Nevik were one of those bands.
They were one of the standout acts at the 2026 Devon Secondary School Battle of the Bands, delivering the kind of raw, energetic performance that made us want to hear what they could do with their own music in a recording studio.
Fast forward a little and Nevik arrived at The Source Studio Exeter to record their debut single, “Greed Wears a Crown” — a furious piece of punk dealing with corruption, COVID and their generation's frustration with the world around them.
And yes, their drummer really did arrive with his drum breakables in a suitcase.
From Battle of the Bands to the Recording Studio
We first properly encountered Nevik through the Devon Secondary School Battle of the Bands.
Among some brilliant young musicians, Nevik stood out.
There was something refreshingly unpolished about them — and we mean that as a compliment. They had the urgency and attitude that makes punk exciting in the first place.
Watching them, we were reminded of the Dead Kennedys: fast, confrontational and energetic, with something to say rather than simply making noise for the sake of it.
That made getting them into the studio particularly exciting.
Recording “Greed Wears a Crown”
“Greed Wears a Crown” is Nevik's first single and their first opportunity to properly capture their sound in the studio.
The song takes aim at corruption and the band's perspective on the COVID era, wrapping its subject matter in the frantic guitars, drums and vocals that first caught our attention when we saw them live.
For a young band recording their debut single, there's always a balance to strike.
You want the recording to sound bigger, clearer and more powerful than a rehearsal-room recording, but you don't want to polish away everything that made the band exciting in the first place.
With Nevik, preserving that rawness mattered.
This wasn't supposed to become pristine, sanitised rock.
It needed to sound like Nevik.
Punk Rock Arrives in a Suitcase
Recording days aren't always glamorous.
Nevik's drummer demonstrated this perfectly by turning up with his drum breakables packed into a suitcase.
Cymbals, pedals, sticks and the essentials arrived ready for action, and before long the band were set up downstairs and making considerably more noise than the suitcase might have suggested.
It's one of the things we enjoy about working with young and emerging bands at The Source Studio.
You don't need an enormous collection of expensive equipment before you're allowed to make a record.
You need songs, preparation, enthusiasm and something worth capturing.
The studio can help with the rest.
Their First Proper Recording Experience
Recording can also be surprisingly exhausting.
Playing the same section repeatedly, listening critically, concentrating on timing and trying to deliver the best performance possible takes considerably more energy than people sometimes expect.
Nevik discovered that fairly quickly.
Or, as the band put it themselves:
“A day in the studio had two effects on us. It was both tiring (as we all had moments where we may have dosed off a little, especially our drummer) and the most exhilarating and enjoyable thing we had done as a band since Battle of the Bands.

We'll take exhilarating.
