Recording, One Instrument at a Time
Most of our clients choose this route. We record the whole band playing together in the live room, with amps in the Control Room or corridor and the vocalist in the vocal booth. This keeps the vocals and guitars out of the drums and allows for a clean drum take.
Once everyone is happy with the drums, we then move on and do a minimum of 3 takes for each instrument in turn. The means that we can correct any small errors and generate a clean take for each instrument, for Miixing & Mastering.
The next step is to send the band a desk mix. This is just a volume-matched mix so the band can hear all the instruments clearly. The band then give feedback and create a playlist of Reference Tracks.
This becomes the brief fo the Mixing & Mastering Engineer.
Recording Your Band Playing Live
Not every great recording needs to be built one instrument at a time. Sometimes the best thing about a band is what happens when everyone plays together. The push and pull. The eye contact. The little changes in tempo. The energy that happens when the whole band is in the room.
At The Source Studio Exeter, we can record your band live — giving you the space to perform together while we capture each instrument properly for mixing afterwards.
If your band cis tight enough, recording can be a great way to record a lot more songs in a day than building up the song one instrument at a time.
